Can an electric fireplace heat my home?

Rotherham Fireplace Centre|18 July, 2022

Obviously, electric fireplaces are designed to provide heating. But, they’re not always the best heating solution for every type of room.

A question that we often get asked is ‘can an electric fireplace heat a room?’. And, in essence, the answer to this question depends on the size of the room that needs to be heated.

Here at the Rotherham Fireplace Centre, we supply and install a wide range of electric, gas and outdoor fireplaces for customers across South Yorkshire.

So, to shed some light on the question, we’ll be explaining the efficiencies of different types of electric fireplaces, and which sizes of rooms they can heat best.

What size room can an electric fireplace heat?

There are a lot of myths out there that electric fireplaces cannot heat a room. And, while this isn’t accurate, it’s not 100% false either. So, we’re here to dispel the myths.

An electric fireplace can heat a room up to 400 square feet or up to 1000 square feet, depending on its heating method.

So, a forced fan electric fireplace can heat a 400 square foot room. In comparison, an infrared quartz electric fireplace can heat a 1,000 square foot room.

To put this into perspective, the average UK living room size (for a house built since 2010) is 184 sq ft. So, forced fan electric fireplaces are more than up to the task of heating your living room.

But, not all electric fireplaces can heat a large room.

The maximum heat output of different types of electric fireplaces

Compared to the specs outlined above, the best option in terms of heating output is a gas fireplace.

While gas fireplaces aren’t necessarily better than other models, if you need to heat a large space, then gas fireplaces will provide a better heat source. In particular, a gas stove will provide the most efficient heat source.

But, take note that a big benefit of electric fireplaces is the way that they can be used as a supplemental heating system. And, although gas stoves have the capacity to heat a larger space, electricity is cheaper than gas. What’s more, electric fireplaces don’t produce emissions or odours.

So, there’s more factors to consider than heat output alone.

To summarise, electric fireplaces aren’t the best choice for the primary heating source of a large property. But, they are an affordable and highly efficient choice for a supplemental heating system, or for the heating of smaller properties.
