7 Tips for Keeping Your Electric Fireplace as Good as New!

Electric fireplaces are renowned for their stunning visual effect. They breathe light, life and warmth into a home.

And, when they’re brand new, these electric fireplaces look absolutely magnificent. Their crisp, modern designs and sophisticated fireplace technology makes them look absolutely flawless. 

You want to keep your electric fireplace looking this good for as long as possible. And that’s what makes regular fireplace maintenance so important. 

By scheduling little-and-often fireplace cleaning, you can keep your electric fireplace looking as good as new for many years to come. When treated well, they are a fantastic investment for any property.

So, to ensure you continue to enjoy all the benefits of your electric fireplace, we’ve shared our 7 top tips for keeping your fireplace in top condition. 

1. The glass will need most of your attention 

The area of the fireplace that will need cleaning the most is the glass. This is because the majority of your electric fireplace is sealed, so it’s very rare that dust, marks or other grime gets inside.

The glass, however, is the part of the unit that’s exposed. As a result, the best way to keep your fireplace looking neat and clean is to regularly wipe dust and marks off the glass.

2. Remember – you’re cleaning dust 

When we talk about electric fireplaces getting dirty, the primary cause of this is dust. Because these units are electric, you don’t get the same smoky, sooty residue as you see building up in wood-burning fires. 

As a result, the cleaning methods that you use don’t need to be anywhere near as hard-hitting. 

3. Choose the right cleaning materials 

When cleaning the exterior surfaces of your fireplace, we recommend using a lint-free cloth, which is just slightly dampened with lukewarm water. 

4. Do not use any cleaning products 

Remember, you’re primarily getting rid of dust. So, chemical cleaning agents aren’t necessary, and they could damage the fireplace. 

But, if there’s some really tough stains on the glass, you can mix some mild cleaning soap in the water, before applying it with your cloth.

Instead, just stick to lukewarm water for the outside of the fireplace. When cleaning the inside, do not use water at all (because you’re cleaning an electrical area, which could react to the water). For these areas, we recommend that you use a dry microfibre cleaning cloth.

5. Do not use any abrasive cleaning cloths 

Avoid abrasive cloths and wire wool. These could cause scratches on the fireplace, or remove paint from the unit. 

6. Don’t forget the air inlets 

If dust builds up in your fireplace’s air inlets, then this could make the unit less effective. 

So, don’t forget to give the air inlets a dust from time to time. To access the area, you might need to remove the trim of your unit. If you’re not sure how to do this, check your fireplace’s instruction manual, or ask a specialist for their advice. 

7. Check the fuel effects

The fuel effects may, occasionally, need a dust down.

To reach this area, you will need to remove the front panel of glass from your fireplace. You can remove the glass by unscrewing the clamps that sit at the two top corners of the panel. Gently lift out the glass, and carefully place it on a soft, flat surface (such as a rug).

You can then dust the area with a dry lint-free cloth, before restoring the glass and screwing it back into place.

Thankfully, modern electric fireplaces are designed so that it’s very difficult for dust to reach the inside of the unit. This means that manual electric fireplace maintenance is a quick and easy job to add to your cleaning list.
