It is common knowledge – and common sense – to know that fires generate immense levels of heat, and it is therefore no surprise that the fireplace in your home can be a seriously hot spot. With wood burning starting at 250 degrees Celsius, but temperatures of at least 450 degrees Celsius required to produce a flame, the burning process in your fire this winter may be hotter than you realise.
Here is a list of 7 of the hottest things in the universe; prepare to be amazed by the sheer size of these numbers.
1. The Flame of a Fire
Whilst it may only take temperatures of around 450 degrees Celsius to produce a flame in a wood fire, it’s interesting to see what temperature these flames actually reach. The average yellow flame in a fire reaches temperatures of 2,000 Celsius, and bright blue flames surpass this at nearly 3,000 Celsius.
2. The Melting Point of Diamond
To melt one of the world’s most valuable substances, diamond, you would need to heat it to a whopping 3,550 degrees Celsius (that’s right, at temperatures like these diamond dealers around the world can breathe a sigh of relief).
3. The Earth’s Core
Right down in the centre of our Earth, at its core, temperatures reach 5,377 degrees Celsius. It’s just a shame we aren’t feeling any of it this chilly December!
4. A Lightning Bolt
It’s not just the electric current that makes lightning bolts so powerful (and, let’s be honest, downright scary). At 27,727 degrees Celsius, the temperature of these forces of nature is quite literally ‘sky high’.
5. The Sun’s Core
With the temperature of the exterior of the sun measuring in at around 5,500 Celsius – just a few degrees more than that of the Earth’s centre, the core of the sun is phenomenally hot by comparison, reaching 13,600,000 degrees kelvin at centre.
6. Controlled Nuclear Fusion
When two or more atomic nuclei collide at high speeds in the process of nuclear fusion, you may not realise the sheer bounds of temperature that are released. With recorded temperatures of 100 million degrees kelvin, these tiny atoms really are plenty powerful.
7. The Big Bang
Possibly the most famous of natural events to have ever occurred – and one possible explanation as to why we are all here today – the big bang certainly got rather heated. At ten seconds after the big bang, the estimated temperature created was (wait for it)…141,679,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 degrees kelvin. Now that’s hot!
